02Switch

Switch — Mechanism Type, Actuation Force, and Sound

Linear is smooth and quiet · Tactile gives a bump · Clicky adds an audible click — switches define every keystroke.

What is a switch?
The mechanism under each keycap — press it, it sends a signal to the PCB. Three main types, each with a completely different feel and sound.
Affects → sound · feel · actuation force

💡 Why Rapid Trigger matters in FPS
Standard switches must return to a fixed reset point before registering again — this slows WASD movement.
Rapid Trigger resets the moment you release, regardless of position, making counter-strafing noticeably faster.
03Case

Case — Material, Weight, and Resonance

What is a case?
The outer shell that houses everything — the first thing you see and what defines weight, sound, and feel.
Affects → sound · weight · price · durability
Plastic (ABS)
Most common — budget-friendly
Weight
Dampening
Value
Thin ABS resonates hollow — add foam to reduce unwanted echo.
Aluminum ✦
Mid-to-high tier — requires dampening treatment

Value
Flex absorbs vibration naturally — produces deep thocky sound without mods.
Polypropylene (PP)
Newer material — excellent natural dampening
Weight
Dampening
Value
More flexible than PC — popular in budget customs for its naturally muted, soft sound.
💡 Dampening = how naturally quiet the material is (higher = less modification needed) · Thocky = deep, full keystroke sound · Ping = high-pitched metal ring
04Plate + Mounting

Plate & Mounting — Structure, Flex, and Sound Profile

What is a plate?
A rigid sheet between keycaps and PCB that holds every switch in position — material (Steel / Brass / PC / FR4) and mounting style define stiffness vs. flex.
Affects → flex · sound · typing feel · price
Tray Mount

Stiff
Flex
Budget
Most common in budget boards — very stiff, clacky sound profile.
Top Mount
Plate screws to the top half of the case
Stiff
Flex
Budget
Step up from tray — slightly less resonance, same stiff character.
Bottom Mount
Plate screws to the bottom half of the case
Stiff
Flex
Budget
Similar flex to top mount — varies by design. Sound tends toward thocky.
Gasket Mount ✦
Plate-PCB sandwich sits on soft gasket material
Stiff
Flex
Budget
Maximum flex — gaskets absorb vibration. Deep, soft thocky sound. Mid-to-high tier.
💡 Flex = how much the plate/PCB gives under your fingers — more flex → softer, deeper sound · Stiff = firm, snappy feedback with higher-pitched tone
05PCB

PCB — Circuit Design and Switch Compatibility

Soldered

What is a PCB?
The circuit board beneath the plate where every switch connects — hot-swap PCBs have sockets so you can swap switches without soldering.
Affects → flexibility · connection stability · price
🔌 Hot-swap
  • Swap switches instantly — no soldering required
  • Ideal for experimenting with different switch feels
  • Easy to repair if a switch fails
  • Slightly higher price
  • Sockets may loosen over time with frequent swaps
Recommended for beginners
🔧 Soldered
  • Switches are permanently attached — changing requires a soldering iron
  • More stable connection — no wobble or loosening
  • Lower cost — some models have limited switch options
  • Best when you already know which switch you want
  • Popular in premium custom builds for connection stability
For confident builders
06Keycaps

Keycap — Profile, Height, and Material

What is a keycap?
The plastic cap over each switch — height, curve, and material directly change how typing feels, even when the switch underneath is identical.
Affects → typing feel · sound · durability

07 Sound

Sound — Tone Characteristics and Acoustic Factors

Why does sound matter?
Every layer contributes — switch, plate, case, and foam all shape the final tone. Understanding sound signatures lets you build toward exactly what you want to hear.

08Connectivity

Connectivity — Interface Type and Input Latency

Which connection type suits you?
Competitive gaming? Wired or 2.4GHz only. Office work or multi-device setup? Bluetooth is far more convenient.
Affects → latency · convenience · battery · price
Polling Rate
125 Hz
Legacy — not recommended
500 Hz
Basic
1,000 Hz
Standard gaming
2,000 Hz
Better, diminishing returns
4,000 Hz
High-end gaming
8,000 Hz
Ultra / Pro
What is polling rate?
How many times per second the keyboard sends its state to the computer — 1000Hz means every 1ms. Higher rates improve responsiveness but consume slightly more CPU.
Wireless Technologies
Type Latency Best for
USB-C (Wired) ~0.5ms Gaming (best)
2.4GHz Dongle ~1ms Gaming wireless
Bluetooth 5.x ~7–15ms Office, multi-device
Multi-mode — switch between 3 devices
Many boards support all 3 modes in one — Keychron, NuPhy, Akko. Ideal for PC + Mac + iPad workflows.
💡 For competitive gaming
Wired or 2.4GHz only. Bluetooth latency is too high for competitive play.

What to look for?
Every feature ties back to a specific component. Know which features matter for your use case before you start shopping.
Affects → gaming performance · customization depth · long-term value

These features benefit everyone — whether gaming, coding, or writing.

Rapid Trigger
Switch resets at the exact release point — no fixed reset position. WASD response in FPS becomes significantly faster, especially for counter-strafing.
Requires: Hall Effect Switch
🎯
Variable Actuation Point
Adjust actuation depth to 0.1mm precision via software — set shallow for gaming or deep for typing, all in one board.
Requires: Hall Effect Switch + Software
⌨️
N-Key Rollover (NKRO)
Register unlimited simultaneous keypresses with zero ghosting — essential for gaming where you need modifier + movement + ability at once. Unlike 6KRO which caps at 6 keys.
Requires: NKRO-capable PCB
📡
High Polling Rate ≥1000Hz
1000Hz = reports every 1ms. 4000Hz and 8000Hz further reduce input lag for competitive play. Current standard for gaming is 1000Hz and above.
Requires: Compatible PCB + Firmware
📶
2.4GHz Low-latency Wireless
Wireless but near-wired latency (~1–2ms) — ideal for gaming without cables. Registers every input immediately, unlike Bluetooth at 7–15ms.
Requires: 2.4GHz USB Dongle
🌈
Per-key RGB
Independent LED per key, programmable per-key via software. Requires a south-facing PCB — ABS keycaps offer better shine-through than PBT.
Requires: South-facing PCB + ABS Keycap
↔️
SOCD Cleaning
When Left+Right or Up+Down are pressed simultaneously, the firmware decides what to send — "Last Input Wins" (LIW) is the FPS standard, improving counter-strafe and movement precision.
⚠️ CS2 and some games ban SOCD in ranked — check your game's rules first
Requires: SOCD-capable Firmware (Wooting, some QMK boards)
⏱️
Debounce Tuning
Debounce is the wait time after a keypress to prevent double-registration. Standard is 5ms; some gaming boards allow down to 0.5ms for less input lag — set too low and chatter may occur.
Requires: Configurable Firmware (QMK / Wooting Wootility)
🔌
Hot-swap Sockets
Swap switches without soldering — great for beginners to experiment. Sockets may loosen if swapped frequently.
Requires: Hot-swap PCB
🔇
Silent Switches
Silent switches use internal dampeners to absorb bottom-out and up-stroke noise — safe for offices and co-working spaces. Up to 40–50% quieter than standard switches.
Requires: Silent Switch (Gateron Silent Red/Brown, Boba U4)
📱
Multi-device Bluetooth
Pair with multiple devices (PC, Mac, iPad) and switch via Fn+1/2/3 — Keychron, NuPhy, and Akko all support 3-device switching in one unit.
Requires: BT 5.x + Multi-pairing Firmware
🛠️
QMK / VIA Programmability
Remap every key via open-source firmware — set macros, layers, tap-dance, and combos without limits. Makes a 60% as functional as a full-size.
Requires: QMK/VIA-compatible PCB
🎵
Gasket Mount
Plate sits on silicone/foam gaskets, adding flex and a soft thock sound — reduces finger fatigue over long sessions. The most popular mounting style in mid-to-high end custom boards.
Requires: Gasket-mount Case
🪨
PBT Keycaps (Durable)
Harder than ABS, resists shine even after years of use. Better texture, softer thock sound. More cost-effective than ABS long-term despite the higher upfront price.
Requires: PBT Keycap Set
💡
South vs North Facing PCB
LED orientation on the PCB affects RGB performance and keycap compatibility. South-facing gives better shine-through; North-facing may cause interference with Cherry and OEM profile switch housings.
Check: PCB spec before buying a keycap set
🎛️
Rotary Encoder (Knob)
A freely programmable dial — assign volume, zoom, scroll, brush size, or any custom macro via QMK/VIA. Ideal for creative work, video editing, and DAW control.
Requires: Encoder-capable PCB + Firmware
🔕
Sound Dampening Layers
Multiple foam layers added during the build — case foam (reduces echo), PCB foam (reduces ping), switch pad / PE foam (reduces hollowness), tape mod (free, adds thock). Each layer changes the sound differently.
Requires: Moddable keyboard + foam/tape
